What is the difference between biodegradable and compostable?

The terms are often used interchangeably, but they do not mean the same thing.

Biodegradable

A biodegradable product can be broken down in nature by micro-organisms (such as bacteria or fungi).
--> However, this can take months or even years, depending on temperature, humidity and environment.
--> Not every biodegradable product is automatically good for the environment — some leave behind microplastics or harmful residues.

Compostable

A compostable product is biodegradable under specific conditions, such as in an industrial composting facility, a well-maintained compost heap, or simply in the organic waste bin in your garden.
--> It breaks down completely within 8 to 12 weeks, leaving no harmful residues.

--> What remains is nutritious compost that can be returned to nature.

In short: all compostable materials are biodegradable, but not all biodegradable materials are compostable.
